In 1870, the internationalist anarchist Giulio Manieri leads a small circle of comrades in a bold yet largely impractical push for revolution in the quiet Umbrian town of Città della Pieve. The plan, born from lofty ideals and a willingness to risk everything, quickly unravels and ends in a catastrophe that seals Manieri’s fate with a death sentence. Yet fate has another path in store: the sentence is commuted to life imprisonment, and the man known for stirring cries of emancipation finds himself locked away from the world, where time stretches into an endless, silent corridor.

Inside the claustrophobic walls, Battistrada becomes Manieri’s unlikely companion in confinement, a constant presence in the margins of his thoughts. The inmate spends the long days in solitary isolation, and rather than surrendering to despair, he begins to stage improvised political debates with himself. These intimate dialogues become his lifeline, a mental theater where the old ideals clash with the grim reality of endless solitude, slowly shaping a fragile inner armor that keeps him alive even as the world outside seems to drift farther away.

A decade passes, and the machinery of punishment moves him to a new prison. On the boat ferrying him toward a fresh confinement in the Venetian lagoon, fate introduces him to a different passage of youth: a boatload of subversive young people headed for the same destination. The encounter promises a chance to rekindle shared passions and to resume the long, internal debate that has defined his existence for so long. Instead, Manieri finds a rift between his utopian, dream-driven method and the newer generation’s approach—one grounded in concrete, data-driven analysis that questions the very possibility of direct, immediate change, preferring patient work for the future over dramatic acts in the present.

The chilling discovery is not merely ideological but existential.
