As Christmas approaches the following year, Kit’s diagnosis of needing an appendectomy serves as a catalyst for him to confront his parents, Bob (Bill Irwin) and Marilyn (Sally Field), who remain unaware of his sexual orientation. Sensing a shift, Marilyn’s suspicion about Michael grows, leading Kit to finally disclose the truth about his boyfriend. Although initially startled by this revelation, Marilyn welcomes Michael into their family with open arms.

Years pass, and Michael and Kit build a life together, sharing a charming townhouse and fulfilling Michael’s childhood dream of celebrating Christmas together. This heartbreaking situation propels Michael to revisit their cherished memories and leads to a powerful reconciliation filled with love and regret. As Kit’s condition deteriorates, an agonizing prognosis reveals that he has only weeks left to live. Kit expresses gratitude for the moments they shared, comforting Michael that he will find his way after he’s gone. In a heartfelt farewell, Michael thanks Kit for embodying the essence of family, a bond that will forever resonate within him.

After Kit’s passing, Michael maintains a close relationship with Bob and Marilyn, serving as a constant reminder of the love they cherished.
