Speech for the Defence 1977

Valentina Kostina is accused of attempting to murder her lover, Fedyaev. She confesses to the crime, but her lawyer, Irina Mezhnikova, seeks to uncover extenuating circumstances that could justify her actions. As Irina delves into Valentina’s life, she uncovers a story of self-sacrifice and unwavering devotion: Valentina had supported her lover financially, depriving herself of nearly everything, and she loved him with a steadfast, even obsessive, loyalty. Yet Fedyaev repaid her with callous ingratitude. Heartbroken and betrayed, Valentina contemplated a desperate act to end both their lives, but both survived, leaving her to face the looming threat of imprisonment.

Irina comes to understand that Valentina is a victim of circumstance, and that Fedyaev is the true architect of the tragedy surrounding them. She attempts to persuade Valentina that Fedyaev is an unworthy, insignificant man who never deserved her sacrifice. Despite Irina’s impassioned arguments, Valentina remains unconvinced, clinging to the conviction that her choice was justified by love.

In the courtroom, Irina’s fervent plea ultimately secures Valentina’s freedom, and Valentina is acquitted. Yet the outcome brings little joy to her; the release feels hollow in the wake of the pain and betrayal she endured. Meanwhile, Irina confronts a personal reckoning: her deep, selfless commitment to Valentina’s cause stands in stark contrast to her own feelings for her fiancé, Ruslan, which she begins to see as superficial and insincere compared to Valentina’s profound love.
