Space Travelers 2000

Nishiyama, Takeshi Kaneshiro, leads a trio of friends who grew up in an orphanage, all dreaming of a peaceful life in paradise. The group’s plan is simple and bold: enter a bank at closing time, grab the money, and disappear on a plane to their imagined utopia. Alongside him is Takamura, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, a very self-contained, steady presence who keeps a cool head under pressure, and Fujimoto, Masanobu Ando, an otaku whose mind is hooked on the anime Space Travelers. Their shared nostalgia for a brighter future fuels a scheme that seems almost too easy to pull off.

But the plan quickly unravels when the bank manager and a security guard lock themselves inside the vault, keeping the cash out of reach as night falls. With the money out of reach and the building surrounded by the police, the three men find themselves trapped inside with hostages, their options narrowing by the minute. The robbers decide to convert the growing standoff into a test of time, using the remaining customers and staff as human shields to buy the crucial minutes needed to rethink their move and escape.

As hours tick by, something unexpected happens: the hostages begin to see pieces of themselves in the robbers and start to empathize with their predicament. The atmosphere shifts from a tense standoff to a delicate, uneasy alliance. In a bid to regain the upper hand, Nishiyama devises a plan to bluff the police by presenting themselves as something more than criminals. The group adopts identities inspired by Fujimoto’s beloved anime and christens themselves as “The Space Travelers.” This clever ruse evolves into a real, evolving dynamic, with each man slipping into a persona that mirrors his own temperament while also echoing the fictional heroes he admires.

What follows is a puzzling, genre-bending cat-and-mouse game where the line between captor and captive blurs. The improvised band of robbers—now partially propelled by the personas they’ve chosen—becomes more animated and daring, while the police grapple with the bizarre spectacle of a hostage situation that feels less like a straightforward standoff and more like a living, evolving performance. The story threads a careful balance between tension and humanity, showing how fear, aspiration, and shared circumstance can fuse strangers into temporary allies, and how a seemingly simple heist can spiral into a deeper exploration of identity, loyalty, and the fragile line between dream and reality.
