Ingrid “Sunny” Sommer is a singer for an East German band, the Tornadoes, whose audience tends to be older listeners. For Sunny, the dream is to perform as a solo pop artist, but singing the same songs to a small crowd has not brought her the breakthrough she desires. When the band’s saxophonist is injured, the musician and philosopher Ralph steps in to fill the role, bringing a new energy to the stage and a different dynamic to the group.

Sunny is drawn to Ralph’s saxophone skill, and the two quickly become more than just collaborators. As their romance blossoms, Sunny asks Ralph to write her a song, hoping it could serve as a launching pad for her solo career. The partnership promises artistic growth and personal connection, with Sunny envisioning a future where her name shines beyond the Tornadoes’ familiar crowd.

Yet the dream is shaken when Sunny walks off the stage just before a performance, and the band soon replaces her with another singer. In the wake of this setback, Sunny leans on Ralph for comfort, only to uncover that he is not faithful. The betrayal stings, but it also tests Sunny’s resolve to pursue her own voice and place in the music world.

A pivotal moment arrives when Sunny finally performs solo on stage with the song Ralph wrote for her. The moment, however, does not ignite the fervent love from the audience she hopes for, and she chooses to step back rather than chase fleeting applause. Struggling with the emotional fallout, she mixes sleeping pills with alcohol and ends up in a hospital for rehabilitation, a turning point that forces her to confront the fragility and resilience of her ambition.

Upon leaving the hospital, Sunny returns to her old factory job, only to find the routine unfulfilling and quit soon after starting again. The film closes on a note of cautious hope as Sunny is ultimately accepted as a singer for another band, a project that offers a sound distinct from the Tornadoes and signals a new path for her career and identity.
