A Parisian detective, Henri Cassin, takes a rare vacation and finds himself drawn to Nanette Michaud, the bright-eyed daughter of innkeeper Pierre Michaud. Nanette is a simple girl with a jealous boyfriend, Leon. Despite the risk, the detective proposes, and the couple becomes engaged, bringing a spark of romance to a place that usually runs on routine and quiet fears.
On the night of their engagement party, Nanette vanishes and is later found dead, rattling the small town. Cassin suspects the obvious culprit is Leon, but soon he himself is found killed, throwing the case into a darker, more personal haze. Nanette’s mother, Mama Michaud, receives a chilling warning that she will be the next to die, and is soon found strangled, shaking Pierre and the villagers.
Pierre, fearing for his safety and the fate of the inn, decides to sell the establishment and withdraw from the public eye. Cassin returns to Paris and uses his investigative instincts to craft a startling rendering of the killer. To his astonishment, the sketch bears his own features. When a tiny footprint matches his shoe, he realizes the murderer is himself. He confesses to the police commissioner, but the confession triggers a professional evaluation by a psychiatrist, who concludes that Cassin is suffering from schizophrenia.
Placed under guard, Cassin escapes back to the village of St. Margot, where the tension escalates as he lashes out toward Pierre. The pursuing police commissioner corners him and shoots him dead, ending a case that began with romance and ended in tragedy.
