Smuggler’s Cove 1948

In a New York highrise, Slip Mahoney, Leo Gorcey is a quick-witted, street-smart amateur sleuth who helps his friends by cleaning offices and chasing small-time puzzles. One routine day turns strange when he discovers a letter addressed to Terrence Mahoney, Esquire, Paul Harvey, promising a hefty inheritance from a wealthy uncle and summoning its recipient to Mahoney Manor on Long Island. Believing the message to be his own windfall, Slip rallies his crew and heads for the manor, eager for a big break and a grand adventure.

Upon arrival, Slip hears a gunshot and pushes inside where he meets Digger, the manor’s seemingly friendly caretaker. Digger is more than he appears: he’s a goon working for the calculating smuggler Count Boris Petrov, Martin Kosleck. Petrov intends to scare the intruders away and quietly continues his illicit business from the very estate Slip has come to claim. The tension thickens as the thieves’ grip tightens around the manor, and the boys refuse to back down.

The next day brings a new twist: a hidden door behind the fireplace reveals a secret passage to a concealed room, and in the glow of the lanterns, the gang discovers they’ve stumbled into a trap. Petrov wastes no time, locking the passage from the outside and sealing Slip and his friends in the basement, where they must plot a way out while keeping their wits intact.

Meanwhile, another Terrence Mahoney arrives with his daughter Teresa, Amelita Ward, and the house briefly shifts from a potential inheritance to a contested home. The arrival of the other heir raises the stakes as Petrov redoubles his efforts to frighten the new arrivals and drive everyone off the property.

Into this murky scene steps Gabe, a determined reporter who Gabriel Dell brings into the narrative. Gabe’s sharp eyes catch Morse code signals flashing across the bay and witness Digger escorting a mysterious woman and a captain ashore, signaling a larger diamond-smuggling operation tied to the manor. His discoveries align with Slip’s suspicions that all is not as it seems, spurring a tense collaboration between the gang and the investigative journalist.
