Small Town Crime 2018

Mike Kendall, an alcoholic ex-cop who has slipped into moonlighting as a private investigator under the alias Jack Winter, fights to stay afloat after a deadly incident that cost his partner’s life. He lives on the generosity of his adopted sister, Kelly Banks, and her husband, Teddy Banks, and he clings to any lead that might redeem him or at least keep him in the game.

During a routine drive, he stumbles upon a young prostitute left for dead on the street and rushes her to the hospital. Although she survives the night, she dies the next day, and a phone call she left behind draws Mike into a dangerous tangle. The caller is unfriendly, and the case pulls him deeper into a web of past mistakes. Mike’s reminiscences about the night of his partner’s death begin to surface—his drunken return fire not only killed the suspect but also the kidnapped girl in the trunk of his car—and the truth challenges his resolve and credibility with his former colleagues.

Kristy Nevile’s parents are questioned as part of the case, and soon Mike is contacted by Kristy’s affluent grandfather, Steve Yendel, who hires him to uncover the truth. The investigation accelerates after the violent death of a second prostitute named Rose, pushing Mike to interrogate a bar owner named Randy, who points him toward Ivy Oarblocker, a friend of Rose and Kristy. When Mike returns home, he is ambushed by Mood, the pimp controlling the trio of girls, and the voice on Kristy’s phone. Mood reveals that he, too, is chasing the killer and cunningly enlists Mike’s cooperation in the pursuit.

As Mike tracks the Oarblocker family, he discovers Ivy has vanished and that men posing as cops have begun to hunt her down as well as her family. He also learns that Randy had been hiding Ivy somewhere and finds himself tailed by trackers as he moves through the case. After forcing Randy to disclose Ivy’s hiding place, Mike interrogates Ivy and uncovers a startling truth: the three girls and Randy had been part of an extortion scheme targeting powerful businessmen who had used the girls’ services. Kristy and Rose were killed by assassins hired by those businessmen to silence them, and Ivy is now in their crosshairs.

With Randy and Ivy en route to the police station, the pair are ambushed by the hired killers. Although they fight them off, Randy is killed, and Mike discovers that Teddy has been kidnapped by the assassins, who threaten to kill him if Ivy is not surrendered. In a tense hostage exchange, Mike negotiates a deal while plotting an ambush with Mood and Steve Yendel. What follows is a sprawling, high-stakes shootout in which the assassins are both killed and all three men are left injured.

In the aftermath, Mike finally takes his private investigator exam, signaling a potential professional turning point. Two of the three businessmen who hired the assassins are arrested, while Mood and Steve Yendel pursue the third man down in Mexico, leaving the door open for further consequences and the chance of closure for those tangled in the case. The story blends hard-earned grit, moral ambiguity, and a relentless pursuit of truth as a broken man seeks redemption through one last, brutal case.
