On the final day of eighth grade, Julie Corky hosts a late-night slumber party with three friends—Hannah Carlson, Farrah James, and Yancy Williams—when a dare from Staci Blake, a former ally turned rival, shifts their plans from girlish fun to a high-stakes scavenger hunt. Staci’s breakup with her boyfriend fuels the challenge: whoever collects the specified items wins a coveted lunch spot near the fountain where the popular kids gather, while the losers end up at tables by the dumpsters. The objective list reads like a field-guide to teenage social power, including a photo of the girls with a date inside a nightclub, the insignia from a local private security company, a pair of boxers from Steve Philips (the boy Julie has a crush on), and the task of dressing an Old Navy mannequin with their own outfits.

With her older brother Ren helping to keep up the ruse that they’re still home, Julie and her friends slip out, steering a path through a web of tiny deceptions and near-misses. They dodge a Patroltec security guard, all while trying to keep Julie’s parents—Gabby and Jay—from discovering their absence. The night takes them from club entrances to back alleys, and Julie discovers that her “date” at the nightclub is actually her schoolteacher, a revelation that complicates her choices and deepens the sense that this game is far bigger than a simple prank.

As the night unfolds, Julie’s quick wit and daring help her stay one step ahead. A chance sighting by Steve Philips—a boy Julie adores—while she skateboards in a dress after a detour in traffic yields a quiet moment of admiration as he watches her from his car. Back at home, Julie convinces Ren to keep covering for her, then slips away to Steve’s house, where she makes a tense escape from him and his friend. The other girls wrestle with their own setbacks, including a moment of alarm when Staci’s crew reports a suspicious person at Steve’s house and the group makes off with the Patroltec insignia from a security guard’s car.

The two factions converge again at the school dance, each having gathered the required items. To settle the score, Staci proposes a tiebreaker: win the crown of the dance’s king or queen. Tensions flare as Todd—Staci’s boyfriend—gets caught kissing another girl, leading to a fractured moment of jealousy. Staci ends up sharing a dance with a scruffy skater friend of Julie’s, Russell, who drops the scavenger list in the process. The drama crescendos as Russell and Staci win the dance contest, sparking a confrontation between Todd and his new girlfriend. Yet the final twist comes when Steve Philips is crowned homecoming king and chooses Julie as his partner for the victory dance, giving Julie’s team the edge and sealing their triumph.

When the night ends, Julie and Steve almost share a kiss, but Ren interrupts with news that Gabby is headed home. The group hurries back, managing to dodge discovery as they slip into Julie’s house and pretend to sleep. The next morning at breakfast, Gabby confronts Julie about what happened, confirming the scarf dropped at the Cosmo club, and yet she isn’t mad; instead, she expresses pride at Julie’s rapid maturity. After farewells, Julie finds Steve waiting in her tree fort with the now-missing crown, and the two finally share a kiss, signaling a new chapter in Julie’s life. In a final image of the film, Staci and her friends move on to high school, eating their lunch by the dumpsters—still on the fringes of the social center they once chased, but forever changed by the night’s events.

The movie centers on Julie Corky, brought to life by Alexa Vega, whose bold choices and quick thinking propel the story from a simple party to a coming-of-age moment under pressure. Throughout, Vega’s performance anchors the film’s tone, balancing humor with growing emotional depth as Julie navigates friendship, loyalty, rebellion, and romance. The narrative keeps a steady pace, weaving together the thrill of the scavenger hunt with the intimate moments of stance and growth that define adolescence, all while tracking Julie’s evolving sense of self and the shifting social landscape of her school. The result is a bright, energetic portrait of teenage ambition and resilience, wrapped in a stylish, lighthearted caper that refuses to patter out into cliché. As the credits roll, the film leaves viewers with a sense of possibility for Julie and her friends as they face the next chapter of high school—with new crowns to chase, and new risks to take—while the memory of a single, unforgettable night lingers in their reflections.
