Young Meng Li, Bee Rogers, loses her mother when a sudden volcanic eruption shakes the Southeast Asian island of Ting-Hao. Years later, as an adult, Meng returns to the island to set up research equipment, drawn by curiosity and a sense of responsibility to understand the force below the surface. On the same shoreline, Jason Isaacs as Jack Harris has already built a resort, convinced that the volcano is not due to erupt for another 150 years, feeding a daredevil appetite in people who want to live on the edge. The clash between scientific purpose and tourist bravado sets the stage for the unfolding crisis.

Meng’s father Wentao, Wang Xueqi, arrives with a blunt warning: she should leave because the volcano is about to erupt again. His warning comes from a place of experience and love, setting up a tension between staying for research and safety. Despite Meng’s initial reluctance to abandon her work, the pair are soon pressed into action when they must rescue a group of tourists who are observing the volcano from a platform inside the crater. The situation is dire, and the odds are stacked against them as lava advances and the landscape grows more unstable with every passing moment.

Most of the tourists survive the peril on the crater platform, but the challenge is far from over. Meng and Wentao must pivot quickly to save a nearby village from being engulfed by the lava flow, turning their mission from extraction to salvation. The danger intensifies as the remaining guests at the hotel are forced to evacuate in a hurry when flaming rocks rain down from above, creating a chaotic scramble for safety. In a tense race against time, Meng, Wentao, and the rest of their group push toward a control center where they can release water from a reservoir and divert the lava away from those in danger.

The journey is marked by narrow escapes and hard decisions. Wentao becomes trapped on the wrong side of the advancing lava, and escape seems impossible when a helicopter arrives but cannot immediately change their fate. The narrative shifts toward endurance and collaboration as the survivors improvise a path to safety. In the end, Wentao reappears on a ship with the others, explaining that, thanks to his daughter’s research, he was able to hide in a hole and survive the ordeal, a quiet testament to the perseverance that carried them through the eruption. Amid the ash and heat, the story honors resilience, scientific curiosity, and the unbreakable bond between a father and daughter as they find a way forward after a catastrophe.
