A Parisian woman named Romy and her husband Richard are vacationing in California when trouble erupts one night in a bar-brought hotel room. Richard, in a drunken moment, tries to assault Romy, and she defends herself by striking him with a lamp, giving her a chance to escape. Believing she has killed him, Romy buys a car and goes on the run, fleeing into the night with a heavy mix of fear and relief. As the days unfold, she makes the difficult decision to turn herself in. At the police station, she learns a shocking truth: her husband is alive, though hospitalized.
