A Parisian woman named Romy and her husband Richard are vacationing in California when trouble erupts one night in a bar-brought hotel room. Richard, in a drunken moment, tries to assault Romy, and she defends herself by striking him with a lamp, giving her a chance to escape. Believing she has killed him, Romy buys a car and goes on the run, fleeing into the night with a heavy mix of fear and relief. As the days unfold, she makes the difficult decision to turn herself in. At the police station, she learns a shocking truth: her husband is alive, though hospitalized. After visiting him in the hospital, Romy ends their marriage and chooses to remain in the United States, stepping into a life far removed from the one she began with.

Her journey continues as she hitchhikes to Las Vegas, where she encounters a local named Charlene and begins to chase work in a city full of bright lights and hidden dangers. She borrows Charlene’s bunny costume to lure tourists into paying to take pictures with her and two Elvis impersonators, a makeshift job that blends performance with survival. That night, Romy meets Diego, an encounter that soon becomes a turning point. They share a night together, and later he slips his address under her door, offering a glimmer of connection in a world of precarious choices. When a friend evicts Romy, she heads to Diego’s place in the California desert, near the border with Mexico, and discovers that Diego is a California Park Ranger. A quiet, intimate bond forms between them, built on shared vulnerability and a longing for steadiness.

As their relationship grows, Romy learns that Diego is dying of cancer. He initially pushes her away, insisting she should leave, yet the deeper truth of their connection persists.
