Amar Verma, Naseeruddin Shah, is a Mumbai-based college lecturer who shares a quiet life with his wife Shobha, Soni Razdan, and their six-year-old son Kunal Kunal Khemu. When a brutal war breaks out between gang lords Veljibhai Paresh Rawal and Chhapan Tikli alias Jimmy Gulshan Grover, a number of innocent bystanders fall victim, including the Verma family’s own child, and this tragedy devastates them. Shobha walks out on Amar, who then devotes his life to his students, trying to channel his grief into meaningful teaching and mentorship, while he grapples with the lasting ache of loss.

Many years pass, and Amar learns that a student, Pooja Pooja Bhatt, is afflicted by a stammer; he decides to help her, and discovers she is the only child of Veljibhai. This revelation pulls Amar deeper into the dangerous world his former peacekeeping efforts touch, even as he strives to provide Pooja with support and confidence through patience, study, and encouragement. He also begins to understand the personal costs borne by those living under the shadow of gang violence, including the families of the men who pull the city’s strings.

Amar stretches to broker a path to peace by meeting with Veljibhai and, separately, Chhapan Tikli, laying out the stakes of the ongoing conflict and the potential for a truce that could safeguard his students. He persuades the gangsters to agree on a temporary halt so he can take Pooja and the rest of the class on a field trip to Bangalore, hoping the experience might offer a glimpse of normal life and a break from fear. Yet the truce proves fragile, and Amar soon learns that neither Veljibhai nor Chhapan Tikli truly intends to honor any ceasefire. The two dons resume their deadly clash, and the mission to protect the students becomes perilously entangled with the violence that has already claimed so much.

Amid the escalating danger, a secondary tension unfolds: Pooja falls in love with her classmate Karan Atul Agnihotri and longs to marry him, even as she faces resistance from her father and the weight of loyalties shaped by the broader conflict. This romance threads through the larger moral puzzle the film poses—between protecting young lives and navigating a world where power, vengeance, and affection collide. The result is a story that navigates grief, resilience, and the stubborn hope that education and compassion can survive even when violence seems dominant.
