The film opens with a disturbing home movie: a family is bound, hooded, and hung in a cornfield before being set aflame. This nightmare haunts 9-year-old Dylan Collins, who hides in a rural farmhouse beside a deconsecrated church with his twin brother Zach and their mother Courtney, as they run from Courtney’s abusive husband, Clint. Each night, Dylan is visited by a group of ghostly children who force him to watch more “home movies” of families being murdered in brutal ways. The scenes unfold as a chilling tour of violence, including a family nailed to the floor and left to bleed out, a decapitation by alligators, and other grisly fates, with the children seemingly orchestrating these revolting endings for no clear reason.
A former sheriff’s deputy, now a private investigator known simply as So-and-So, arrives in town to track the killings tied to the malevolent bughuul. His goal is to burn down the houses where the murders occurred, hoping to sever the cycle before another family moves into them—among the sites is the house tied to the Oswalt massacre. He reaches the Collins’ farmhouse, where the living arrangement, a fragile shelter from the danger outside, is laid bare. Clint shows up intending to take the boys, but the Deputy asserts he needs a court order, and the confrontation ends with Clint leaving. Courtney contemplates fleeing, but the Deputy convinces her to stay, arguing the danger would persist if they ran. A wary bond forms between Courtney and the Deputy, adding a personal layer to the already dangerous situation.
Meanwhile, the Deputy consults Prof. Stromberg, who has uncovered a ham radio that belonged to the missing Jonas, a key link to a trail of murders spanning decades. The radio reveals a chilling artifact from a Norwegian family in 1973, including a recording of a daughter screaming for her mother before a murder—and a piano tone that underscores the occult history. Stromberg explains that Bughuul is believed to be reachable through ritual sacrifice and consumption of innocent fear, with three telltale patterns appearing in each tragedy: a murdered family, missing children, and an aesthetic totem or art that serves as an offering to summon the demon. The Deputy orders Stromberg to destroy the radio, but the damage lingers in the background of the unfolding events.
Dylan’s connection to the ghostly children intensifies when Zach grows resentful of the attention Dylan receives. The kids show Dylan a new video depicting the church murders, Sunday Service, intensifying the danger. Dylan, frightened, refuses to watch further, and the children redirect their focus to Zach, declaring that Dylan is not their true target.
Clint returns with the court order, and Courtney accompanies him to protect the boys. The Deputy heads to Clint’s home to warn them, but Clint assaults him, insisting he leave. The next day, Zach films his family during an outdoor hangout, and that night Dylan and his parents slip into unconsciousness as the danger closes in again. Courtney, Dylan, and Clint are drugged and bound to scarecrow posts with sacks over their heads in a cornfield near Clint’s house—a nightmare echoing Dylan’s earlier visions. Possessed Zach douses his family with three separate trails of gasoline, sets Clint on fire, and films the moment of his death. Just as the flames threaten Dylan, the Deputy arrives, ramming Zach with his car and freeing Courtney and Dylan as they stumble into the cornfield’s darkness.
Inside the house, the ghost children attempt to guide Zach toward their malevolent goal, but the Deputy’s timely intervention disrupts the pattern by destroying the camera that records the scene, breaking the cycle of the ritual. Bughuul materializes as punishment for Zach’s failure, and the boy’s body begins to rapidly decompose while a cloth projection screen bursts into flames, sealing the house in fire. The Deputy, Courtney, and Dylan escape the blaze.
In the aftermath, the Deputy collects his belongings to move on with Courtney and Dylan, only to discover the ham radio waiting in his motel room. The ghost children reach out to him through the device, their voices echoing back and forth, until Bughuul finally appears, leaving the audience with the chilling sense that the nightmare is far from over.
