Raj Raj Kapoor, a country boy from Allahabad, travels to the big city, Bombay, by walking, to earn a living. In the bustling metropolis, he meets Vidya Nargis, a poor but virtuous woman who believes in the possibility of a decent life for everyone. Yet his happiness is short-lived as he is drawn into a glittering and morally loose lifestyle offered by Seth Sonachand Dharmanand Nemo and the sultry Maya Nadira. The allure of wealth and ease begins to erode his simpler values, and Raj slowly transforms into a confidence trickster, a “420” who even cheats at card gambling. Vidya’s steadfast care tries to pull him back from the edge, but her steady moral pull clashes with his new, dangerous temptations, leaving her increasingly disillusioned.

In the shadows of this moral drift, Sonachand unveils a bold Ponzi scheme designed to exploit the very people who trust him, offering them permanent homes for just Rs. 100. The promise proves to be intoxicating: the scheme seems to work at first, drawing in crowds who hoard money for homes, often neglecting other important needs along the way. Raj’s fall from grace weighs heavily on Vidya, whose disdain for the path he has chosen grows with every new scheme that lines Sonachand’s pockets. As Raj’s fortunes rise, he begins to realize the price he has paid—loss of his integrity and the growing distance from the principles he once held dear.

With a sense of guilt sharpening his conscience, Raj resolves to make things right. He seizes the bond papers of the people’s homes and attempts to flee Sonachand’s dominion, hoping to dismantle the web of deceit. But Sonachand and his cronies are not willing to let go of their ill-gotten gains easily. In the ensuing struggle, Sonachand shoots Raj, who sinks to the floor, seemingly defeated. The onlookers are ready to believe the worst: Raj tried to steal from Sonachand’s safe, and the crime is laid at his feet.

Yet the story takes a dramatic turn when the presumed dead Raj returns to life. Calmly and methodically, he uses pure logic to uncover Sonachand’s guilt, laying bare the fraud and the lies that powered the scam. The police move in, Sonachand and his partners are arrested, and a hopeful Vidya forgives Raj for the pain he caused. The film closes on a note of rebirth and moral clarity, as Raj offers a final, defiant line that reframes his journey:
