Nilkanta Roy is a revered figure in a North Bengal village, where his daughters Kabita and Nandini mean the world to him. Kabita falls in love with a local named Ajoy and, on the night of her arranged marriage, escapes with him to Digha. Nilkanta’s younger brother Bikash grows suspicious, suspecting that Ajoy’s friends are involved in the elopement.

Raju Majumder, one of Ajoy’s closest friends who also lives in the same village, is brutally questioned about the whereabouts of Ajoy’s companions. He reveals that three more people—Abir Chatterjee from Kolkata, Shankar Ghosh from Howrah, Arun Das from Haldia, and Subhas Saha from Burdwan—may have helped the couple. A mistaken reference of initials leads to the kidnapping of Subhas Basu from Burdwan, while the original man is left untouched. Arun, meanwhile, cannot be caught in Haldia because he is away.

In Kolkata, a drunk Dev, known as Abir, is kidnapped near his house; he is infamous for being a nomad and a master at escaping. Nilkanta’s men imprison him and the others in a small penthouse inside Nilkanta’s residence. The plan is to escape at dawn by boarding a train to Kolkata. As the others edge toward the train, Abir is drawn to Nandini at the village temple in the forest, and he falls in love with her, though she remains unaware of his identity. The group is captured again, and the penthouse’s design keeps their faces hidden from the outside world, with only three windows offering glimpses of the outer world.

The captives’ fear deepens, but Abir remains brave. He asks Nandini to help him uncover Kabita’s whereabouts, offering in return to reveal information about Nandini’s own location. A crucial piece of the puzzle lies in Kabita’s letters from Ajoy, which are now in Abir’s possession, and Nandini is determined to recover them. Arun is eventually cornered in Haldia, and under pressure, reveals that the couple is in Digha. Abir manages to smuggle Kabita and Ajoy to Kolkata without the knowledge of Nilkanta’s henchmen. At the penthouse, Abir discloses that he is the mastermind behind Kabita’s elopement with Ajoy, a revelation that Nandini overhears when she hides there to steal the letters and escapes through a back door. She burns the letters and, later, shares what she heard with her maid, an act that sets off a chain of hidden truths. Bikash appears, listening in, and the truth begins to come out: Abir discovers that his love is actually Nandini.

Brutal torture of Abir and his friends continues, but he eventually confesses that the couple is in Kolkata to save his friends. Nilkanta, Bikash, Nandini, and others travel to Kolkata to search for the couple at the temple, while Kabita and Ajoy arrive there undetected. Abir earns the trust of Nilkanta and his henchmen by saving Nandini from a group of goons who attempt to molest her, and she begins to reciprocate his feelings, though she does not openly admit them.

Abir urges Nilkanta and the others to stay at his home, where he introduces his mother and explains the pain Nilkanta endures because of Kabita’s actions. The next day, Nilkanta and Abir catch Kabita and Ajoy red-handed at Prinsep Ghat in front of everyone; Kabita openly defies her father, addressing him as a “chasing dog.” Dejected, Nilkanta leaves, while Abir watches.

On the return trip to North Bengal, relationships fray and then heal as the family parts ways. Nilkanta apologizes to Abir and his friends and invites them to Nandini’s marriage. Nandini looks to Abir, waiting for him to confess, but he remains silent as the car pulls away.

Seeing her son living a dull, lifeless life, Abir’s mother urges him to win Nandini as his wife. With Shankar, Subhas, Arun, and Raju urging him on, Abir travels to attend the wedding. When Abir confronts Nilkanta, he confesses his love for Nandini and pledges that they will not elope. He then heads back to Kolkata, only to encounter Nilkanta and Nandini on a railway platform. Realizing that Nandini’s happiness lies with him, Abir steps back and lets the lovers unite that night. The couple receives Nilkanta’s blessing as the film ends with a sense of hopeful reunion. > chasing dog
