Set inside a Joseon-era palace, a tight-knit group of gungnyeo—palace women bound by secrecy, obedience, and celibacy—tends to the royal family while navigating a labyrinth of status and intrigue. With no heir in sight, Hee-bin Yoon Se-a, the royal concubine, has given birth to a son. The queen mother desires the child to be raised by the queen, but she hesitates, fearing that the adoption could lead to her disposal once it becomes official.
One morning, Wol-ryung Seo Young-hee, Hee-bin’s most trusted maid, is found dead, hanging from the palace roof. At first it seems like suicide, but the royal medic Chun-ryung Park Jin-hee discovers that Wol-ryung was strangled and that she had, at some point, given birth—a forbidden secret within palace rules. Ignoring orders to close the case quickly, Chun-ryung sets off in search of the truth.
Amidst the growing mystery, rumors swirl about an affair with a teacher at a nearby school, the torture of a mute court maid, a beheading, and records of the king Kim Hak-seon’s nightly visits to his concubine. The investigation unfolds as a web of courtly politics where danger hides in plain sight, and every lead could threaten the fragile balance of power, especially as the king’s nocturnal habits come under scrutiny.
An elaborate scheme spearheaded by Hee-bin’s advisor is revealed: Wol-ryung was chosen to bear the crown prince, and she was murdered to hide the baby’s origin. When the truth is exposed, the advisor imprisons Chun-ryung, overpowers Hee-bin, and makes off with the baby. In the forest, the ghost of Wol-ryung intercepts the culprit and murders him. The vengeful spirit then visits the royal palace and kills the queen mother Ye Su-jeong, clearing the way for the crown prince to ascend.
Chun-ryung later finds the baby in the forest, and the next day, as the palace mourns the queen mother in white robes, the coronation of the new prince unfolds with Hee-bin holding the infant, signaling a transfer of power into new hands.
