Vijay Sethupathi stars as Inspector Ka, a disciplined Chennai cop whose family has long served the country. His mother Satyabhama is an IAS officer, his maternal grandfather was a soldier who earned a medal for killing 200 enemies (a prize Ka secretly covets), and his father-in-law is an Inspector General of Police. The film builds a tense backdrop of national duty and personal history, setting Ka against a rising storm of terrorism that has hardened its roots abroad and now strikes at home.

Ka’s competence is quickly tested when he cornered a terrorist, Sivasubramaniam, in a hospital and browbeats him into talking. Owing to Ka’s empathy and resolve, Sivasubramaniam divulges a critical detail: the gang plans a major terrorist strike aimed at the Prime Minister during a high-profile meeting with Chief Ministers in Chennai. The confession comes at a grim cost, as Sivasubramaniam uses Ka’s own gun to end his life, leaving Ka with a clear but dangerous path to avert disaster.

The death of Sivasubramaniam sparks the arrival of Sivaprakasam, the looming mastermind who now leads the cell. Sivaprakasam’s plan is not only to execute the attack but to wipe out Ka’s family, turning a personal tragedy into a nationwide crisis. He pretends to be a warm, trustworthy man named “Satyaprakasham” and, with a dangerous charm, wins over Ka’s mother, Ka’s wife, Ka’s sister, and Ka’s grandfather, arranging an engagement with his supposed gentle daughter Saraswathi. The deception is meticulous, designed to pull Ka away from the heart of the matter as the clock runs down.

Meanwhile, the terrorists seize a school where Ka’s wife works as a teacher and force the hand of a desperate plot: they demand a plane and funds to flee the country. Sivaprakasam intensifies the danger by bringing his own wife into the scheme, Ka’s sister, and violence erupts as the plan unfolds. Ka’s wife makes a heartbreaking decision and shoots her sister to end the sister’s suffering, a move that underscores the brutal strain on Ka’s family. A brave, senseless act by a student—an innocent fifth-grader—also marks the escalating stakes.

Ka returns to the front, arriving after he has already eliminated one of their numbers and, adopting a disguise, closes in on the terrorists. He methodically dismantles the cell, taking down Sivaprakasam and the remaining threats, all while the injured pilot’s guidance helps secure the plane’s final path to safety. The sequence tests Ka not just as a cop, but as a man who must protect a wider circle of loved ones.
