In June 1965, a troop of scouts from Île-de-France grows tired of tyrannical leaders, whom they nickname “Diên Biên Phu” for their excessive love of the drill-sergeant routine. Their frustration boils over during the Scout Promise ceremony in Paris, and they even manage to remove their leader by letting him fall into a manhole cover. This bold upheaval sets the tone for a story that blends humor with the challenges of growing up under pressure.

In the summer that follows, the responsibility to steer a turbulent troop falls to Jean-Baptiste Foucret, nicknamed “Biquet” by an overbearing mother. He arrives at the camp with good intentions but little leadership experience, limited authority, and scant support from his assistants. The scouts sense his insecurity, and he quickly finds himself their target, a novice who is frequently overwhelmed by the chaos around him. The camp becomes a crucible where games, pranks, and constant schemes push him to his limits as a leader.

The adventures intensify as the group moves from one misadventure to another. From a dramatic bus fire to the revolt of the Impalas patrol, Jean-Baptiste Foucret must navigate a web of relationships and pressures. He contends with the chaplain’s father, not always easy to appease, and the chaplain’s sister, a figure with looser morals that complicates camp life. Edith, a village woman with similarly relaxed mores, adds another layer of social tension to the mix. The situation is further complicated by the presence of Gypsies, with whom relationships are not always smooth, and by the local countrymen who have grown tired of the scouts’ tricks. Throughout it all, the scouts themselves continually devise new schemes, forcing him to respond to one unforeseen catastrophe after another.

The film paints a portrait of a boy on the cusp of adulthood, thrust into a leadership role that reveals both his limitations and his potential. As the summer camp unfolds, the humor, the friction, and the occasional tenderness intertwine to show a world where youthful exuberance collides with responsibility. Amid the laughter and the scrapes, the story lingers on the stubborn resilience required to guide others, even when every step seems to lead toward the worst possible moment.
