Marty, Enzo Marcos is an amateur comic book artist who sees the world around him as a vivid picture book and often marks the people he dislikes as monsters. When he was a high school sophomore, he faced frequent bullying until Sally, Rhian Ramos, a gadget inventor, stepped in and later helped Marty get his revenge by publicly shaming the bully. The moment they team up, they become inseparable best friends, and as the years pass, Marty finds himself developing feelings for Sally, a love that remains unreciprocated for a long time.

As Marty spends time with Sally, he begins to notice the tension at her house: Sally’s adoptive parents are strict, and he suspects she endures physical abuse. Sally sometimes claims she’s busy with a “secret project,” but the truth is more fragile and dangerous. The two dream up a private system—a high-powered telescope and a codebook of signals using clothes—that lets them communicate beyond what Sally’s parents would permit. After finishing high school, they decide to attend the same college together, enrolling as fine arts students, and a new chapter begins.

Marty receives a call from Renegade Komiks, a comic book publisher, offering a chance to pitch a storyline to Toto, the eyepatch-wearing editor. When Marty initially struggles with his first concept, he pivots to a new tale inspired by his feelings for Sally and the turbulent dynamics with her family and Nick, whom Marty regards as a monster. Sally, meanwhile, is in a relationship with Nick, a detail that stings Marty even as he moves forward. Marty’s pitch to Renegade Komiks evolves into a story about an astronomer who devotes his life to saving a girl abducted by aliens in a prison—a narrative born from his real-life experiences with Sally, her parents, and Nick. Although Toto is hesitant about publishing a love story, he ultimately agrees, and the comic lands with surprising success.

Nick invites Marty to a rave. Under the glow of the party, Marty gets drunk and notices the girl Nick is flirting with, while Nick himself seems eager to wed Sally someday. Sally asks Marty to pick up art supplies; later they spot Nick with another woman, and a heated argument erupts back in Marty’s room when Sally discovers Marty’s secret drawings of her. Marty confesses his feelings, but Sally insists she’s not ready for a commitment. Overwhelmed by heartbreak, Marty sinks into a dark creative spell and compiles his sorrow into a “Book of Sad,” which he sends to Sally, hoping to reach her through his art.

On a seemingly ordinary day, Sally approaches Marty to have him autograph a copy of his comics, revealing a plan to sell them once he becomes famous. She admits she had left Nick and that Marty’s own girlfriend has emigrated to Australia. In a bid to lift him, Sally sends a “Book of Happy” to Marty—an interactive pop-up book that chronicles their shared adventures and even includes a hidden clue within a reversed codebook. The hidden clue hints that Sally’s feelings have shifted, signaling that she now returns his love.

Driven by renewed hope, Marty races to Sally’s home, only to overhear her parents violently beating her. Confronted with the brutal truth, he refuses to accept the supplied excuses and urges Sally to run away with him. The two make a frantic escape, grabbing belongings and sprinting toward safety as Sally’s parents give chase. They hide in a dumpster where Sally unveils her “secret project”—a fully equipped hideout crammed with gadgets and, most importantly, a rocket she once planned to use to escape but ultimately no longer needs. The revelation redefines their goals: rather than merely surviving, they will build a life together.

Back in the world of publishing, Marty continues to work for Renegade Komiks, using the earnings to support Sally’s independence. He helps her rent an apartment, which she later pays back with proceeds from a photo exhibit. The couple graduates and continues their relationship, now bound not just by shared history but by a concrete plan for a future where they support one another, free from the shadows of abusive environments and the pain of unrequited love.

Throughout their journey, Shamaine Buencamino as Sally’s Mom and Archie Adamos as Sally’s Dad loom in the background, representing the overbearing force that Sally finally escapes.
