Maharaja Arunangshu, the ruler of the princely state of Balabantpur, leaves behind a deathbed wish list that governs the succession. The first condition forbids Himangshu from marrying a non-Hindu, and the second requires a legitimate heir within three years of marriage. Bound by these rigid terms, Himangshu marries Alaka, an aspiring actress, setting the stage for a carefully controlled lineage.
A year and a half into this marriage, Harinath, the palace librarian who has grown close to Alaka, vanishes without a trace. The mystery draws in the renowned sleuth Byomkesh Bakshi, along with his author friend, Ajit, who arrive in Balabantpur under the guise of an invitation to a hunting expedition. The presence of outsiders brings a fresh lens to the palace’s murky corridors, where whispers about loyalty, power, and bloodline circulate among the residents.
As the investigation unfolds, Byomkesh becomes deeply engaged with Kaligati, the royal physician, and pieces together a tangle of clues that connect Kaligati to Harinath’s disappearance. The detective’s attention to detail and patient probing begin to reveal a network of secrets that extend beyond mere disappearance, touching the intimate corners of palace life and the geography of Balabantpur itself. The case grows more complex as the truth about Alaka’s character emerges: she is described as emotionally frigid, yet intent on preserving the royal bloodline, and she harbors a pivotal motive that links back to the future of the throne.
The story also reveals a dangerous web of desire and ambition. Himangshu, lacking attraction toward Alaka in a romantic sense, is drawn to Leela, Kaligati’s daughter. On a previous hunting expedition, Alaka had arranged for Leela to accompany Himangshu, and Leela became pregnant with his child. Harinath, who loves Leela and desires to marry her, knows of the pregnancy and the bond between Leela and Himangshu. Kaligati, fearing that Leela’s child might be publicly recognized as Harinath’s instead of Himangshu’s, sees the potential threat to his own position in the family line and the royal lineage.
Driven by a motive to secure prestige as the grandfather of the royal offspring, Kaligati orchestrates a terrible plan. He engineers Harinath’s drowning in quicksand on the night he discovers that Harinath has married Leela and that Leela’s child is tied to Himangshu’s lineage. The tale then follows Byomkesh as he pieces together the evidence, exposes the manipulations behind Harinath’s disappearance, and ultimately identifies Kaligati as the mastermind behind the Balabantpur mystery.
With careful pacing and lucid narration, the narrative unravels a layered portrait of ambition, tradition, and cunning, where the boundaries between duty and desire blur, and the true motive behind the palace’s tragedies comes into sharp relief. The resolution leaves readers with a clear understanding of how a respected physician’s scheme could shape the fate of a entire royal house, and how a determined detective can untangle even the most intricate threads of deceit.
