Spoilers ahead
Eight souls in the pre-mortal life forge a vow to stand by each other once they enter mortality, a pact that becomes the quiet through-line of the story. The youngest, Emily, carries a thread of fear—that when her turn to be born arrives, their parents might tire of new life, and she might not be born into the family at all. The eldest, Jimmy, makes a personal promise to look after Emily and ensure she joins them on earth. Alongside them, Julie Caroline Labrum—the second-oldest daughter—and Tod Mason D. Davis—another spirit from the pre-mortal life—make a mutual pledge: while on earth, they will somehow find each other and, if fate allows, marry.
