Satan 1991

In a provincial town bathed in the amber light of autumn, schoolgirl Olya, daughter of the influential Alyona Pavlovna, accepts a ride to school from Vitaly. The trip quickly darkens when he murders her near a railway yard, and then he hides his bike and clothes at a country house where his grandfather, who was aware of his intentions, waits for him.

Later that day, the pattern of movement and motive widens: Vitaly heads into town, makes a brief stop to see his friend Ruben (who is with a girlfriend), and then declares his romantic interest to Vera, who rejects him with quiet honesty. The town’s social web tightens around the event as a wedding later that evening becomes the setting for a confrontation—Vitaly clashes with Ruben over a nationalist remark, and, while dancing with the bride, commits an act of violence that he trusts will go unreported.

Meanwhile, Vitaly and his grandfather contact Olya’s parents, demanding a ransom for her return, a move that drags the family into a tense stalemate. It is revealed that Vitaly had once been involved with Alyona Pavlovna, but she ended the relationship because of his reputation, a detail that shadows every subsequent move they make.

Olya’s father, Korshunov, a local theater actor, goes to the police when it becomes clear the ransom cannot be raised immediately. Korshunov’s sense of duty and the theater world’s public face collide with the murkier, more private calculations surrounding the missing girl.

As Alyona Pavlovna seeks help from her powerful contacts, Korshunov manages to maneuver a ransom delivery under police surveillance, though the plan’s success remains uncertain. The tension in the town deepens as the night wears on and the truth begins to exert its pressure from all sides.

That night, Vitaly and his grandfather celebrate their scheme at the country house, but Vitaly makes one final demand: his grandfather should leave town. When he returns home, Alyona Pavlovna is waiting, desperate after realizing the ransom has failed and the truth about Olya’s fate has started to surface. A fault line cracks the conversation, exposing Vitaly’s direct involvement in the abduction and murder, and he responds with a cold confession before walking away.

In the film’s final shot, Vitaly waves to the viewer from a departing tram, a stark, ambiguous closing image that leaves Alyona Pavlovna suspended in devastation and the town forever changed by what occurred.
