The peaceful scene is interrupted by a threat from Hell: Lucifer, who enlists his chief demon El Diablo to travel to Earth and turn the world’s children away from Santa, with a grim promise that failure would mean punishment—one that involves chocolate ice cream eaten as retribution.

In a bustling marketplace, Pitch makes his move, trying to persuade five children to “make Santa Claus angry.” The plan targets Lupita, a poor girl, along with Billy, the son of wealthy but neglectful parents, and three troublesome brothers. The first attempt to twist Lupita’s fate ends in failure when she resists the urge to steal a doll from a vendor, but the three brothers succeed in smashing a shop window. Santa’s child workers quickly alert him to the trouble, and the wheels of fate begin turning toward a night of trials.

Unable to reach Earth before nightfall on Christmas Eve, Santa relies on his listening devices to monitor what unfolds below. One device lets him glimpse Lupita’s dream, a night-mare induced by Pitch in which life-sized dolls lure her toward theft. A failed attempt to snatch the sleigh leads Pitch to strip Santa of his dream powder as Santa drops the disappearing flower, leaving him momentarily exposed to the hazards of a growing dawn.

The chase reaches a fever pitch when Santa, nearly finishing his rounds, is pursued by a vicious dog outside a large Mexico City house. Separated from his powder and flower, Santa climbs a tree to escape. Pitch escalates the ruse by waking the household and calling the fire department to stage a scene of danger, hoping to trap Santa in the public eye.
