The film opens in Virginia in 1865, just after General Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House. A war correspondent, John Litel as Jim Steed, exchanges barbed words with Count von Bohlen, Albert Dekker — a swaggering Prussian army officer serving as a military attaché during the Civil War. A year later, Steed is in Vienna on the eve of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. There, he encounters a famous dancer, Anna Marie, Yvonne De Carlo, whom he persuades to spy on von Bohlen, now a member of the Prussian general staff and smitten with her. The secret plans they manage to pass to the Austrians fail to avert the decisive Prussian victory.
Escaping Vienna ahead of the advancing Prussian army, they head to the United States and plan to launch her career in show business. Stopping in a small western town to stage a show, they choose the exotic Salome Jane Adams for her debut, but the performance is robbed at gunpoint by local desperados. After the money is recovered from the bandits, the town elders christen the settlement with the name Salome, Where She Danced. The bandit leader, Cleve Blunt, played by David Bruce, an ex-Confederate soldier, develops a romantic interest in Anna Marie and accompanies her on the journey westward.
Moving on to San Francisco, they secure the backing of a wealthy Russian colonel to support her career. Just as she is about to break through, Count von Bohlen returns to seek revenge, leading to a climactic confrontation.
