December 5 will never be the same. St. Niklas, Huub Stapel, is not the benevolent figure children are told about. He is a cruel, bloodthirsty bishop who, whenever there is a full moon on December 5, rises from the dead to slaughter as many children as possible. He travels with a gang of robbers and thieves across the countryside in the middle ages, raping, plundering and killing. When a desperate village people decide they’ve had enough, they set the ship on which he travels ablaze, murdering him and his thugs in a fiery blaze. Yet Niklas swears revenge, and the legend says that each time a full moon returns on December 5—roughly every 36 years—he and his helpers will come back to haunt the living.

The story shifts to Amsterdam, Holland, on a misty, snowy December night. Frank, Egbert Jan Weeber, a kind 17-year-old, and a group of friends are suddenly faced with the terrifying presence of Niklas and his henchmen. Frank is the only one to escape the massacre as his friends are murdered before his eyes. When the authorities question him, the police don’t believe his account and arrest him as the prime suspect, turning a night of fear into a bitter accusation.
