In the rural setting of Vanthaarangudi near Thiruvannamalai, a newly appointed government school teacher, Dayalan, arrives with a clear problem: the education system in his district is in a frail state, and the school’s atmosphere is stifling. He is determined to challenge the status quo and push for meaningful improvements, not just cosmetic changes. His arrival sets off a quiet clash with the existing order as he begins to imagine a more engaging, supportive learning environment for his students.
His reform-minded approach immediately meets resistance from Singaperumal, the Assistant Head Master. The rest of the staff and many students are wary or hostile toward his ideas. Yet, Dayalan’s genuine care slowly earns the attention of Pandian, who observes the shifts in the classroom and the growing interest among the pupils.
Within the same school, a romance blossoms between Pazhani and Arivazhagi, with Pazhani’s father serving as a fellow teacher in the same institution. This personal thread adds warmth to the school’s daily life while Dayalan’s reforms press forward, testing the balance between ambition, affection, and duty.
But the opposition’s sting grows sharper. A teacher sexually abuses Arivazhagi, and she tries to end her life by poison. Singaperumal wastes no time and files a case against Dayalan, charging him as the culprit. When Arivazhagi comes forward to the police, stating that a teacher abused her, Dayalan is arrested and then released as the truth comes to light.
To prove the value of his approach, Dayalan orchestrates an inter-school competition. The inside story of hard work from Arivazhagi and Pazhani helps his school clinch first place, signaling a breakthrough moment in the district’s education scene.
Yet the struggle is not over. Singaperumal orchestrates a mob attack on Dayalan, leaving him in critical condition and hospitalized. As the community reels, his wife arrives at the hospital and offers a powerful call to action, inspiring the students to study harder for the looming exams. The students answer the challenge and achieve top results in the district. Suddenly, his wife, Mrs. Dayalan, arrives at the hospital and inspires the students to strive for excellence.
In the end, Dayalan hands over the role of headmaster to Singaperumal, who reforms and offers a formal apology. The film closes with Dayalan continuing his mission, moving on to another village to reform yet another government school, driven by the belief that bold, compassionate education can change lives.
