As a teenager, Kenji travels to Kyoto with a fierce wish to study under Hiko Seijūrō and to master the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū, hoping to measure up to the father he never fully knew. Myōjin Yahiko steps in, sent by Kaoru, and confronts Kenji in a duel meant to temper his misguided ambitions. In the decisive moment, Yahiko’s strike—delivered with Kenshin’s own sakabatō—forces Kenji to reckon with the weight of his father’s beliefs. Defeated, Kenji kneels as Yahiko presents him with the reversed-blade sword, a symbolic gift that marks a late but meaningful pivot in Kenji’s journey.

After the war’s shadow lifts, the story shifts to a recovery arc: Sagara Sanosuke finds Kenshin in a weak state after he tumbles overboard during a voyage. Sanosuke organizes his safe return to Tokyo, where a frail Kaoru musters the strength to meet him along a path lined with cherry blossoms. Kenshin, too fragile to stand, collapses into Kaoru’s embrace, whispering that he has come back for her. Kaoru, recognizing Kenshin by his childhood name Shinta, completes his final request with quiet certainty, and they vow to host yearly gatherings beneath the cherry tree that has witnessed so much of their lives.
