Roti Kapada Aur Makaan 1974

After the retirement of his father, Bharat bears the weight of his Delhi-based family on his shoulders. He has two younger college-going brothers, [Amitabh Bachchan] as Vijay and [Manoj Kumar] as Deepak, and a sister Champa. Though Bharat is a college graduate, the only work he can secure is as a low-paid singer, a reality that unsettles his girlfriend, Sheetal, [Zeenat Aman] as Sheetal. Meanwhile, Vijay has turned to crime as a last resort to help the family survive, but following an argument with Bharat, he leaves home to join the army.

Sheetal begins working as a secretary for rich businessman Mohan Babu, [Shashi Kapoor] as Mohan Babu, and the latter grows attracted to her. Sheetal loves Bharat but cannot imagine a life mired in poverty, creating a painful tension between love and material need.

Bharat eventually lands a job as a builder, but he soon discovers that the government has taken over the building site, worsening his financial struggles. When Mohan proposes marriage, Sheetal accepts, leaving Bharat heartbroken and wondering where his future will lead. He also endures another blow when he loses his father, a loss that devastates him deeply. In his fury and grief, he burns his diploma on his father’s funeral pyre, a reckless act that underscores his sense of defeat.

Champa finds a suitor, but Bharat does not have enough money to pay for the wedding. Depressed and adrift, Bharat finds a form of salvation by helping Tulsi, [Moushumi Chatterjee] as Tulsi, a woman living in poverty. He also befriends Sardar Harnam Singh, who comes to his aid when Bharat attempts to rescue Tulsi from a dangerous gang. Soon, he is drawn into the orbit of Nekiram, [Madan Puri] as Nekiram, a corrupt businessman who tries to lure Bharat into illegal activities to pull his family out of poverty.

Deepak joins the police force, and Bharat, now working for Nekiram, decides to expose his malpractices. Nekiram discovers the threat and frames Bharat instead. Deepak, the new police officer assigned to arrest Bharat, finds himself between family loyalty and duty to the law. Vijay joins forces with Bharat to bring Nekiram down, hoping to restore some semblance of order and justice to their collapsing world.

In the escalating clash, Sheetal, who has come to regret choosing wealth over love, sacrifices her life. The combined effort of Bharat, Vijay, Deepak, Mohan Babu, and Sardar Harnam Singh results in Nekiram and his troops being jailed. In a poignant turn, Bharat sees a reflection of Sheetal in Tulsi and, embracing the memory of his lost love, chooses Tulsi as his wife, seeking a chance at a new, steadier life with the help of the friends who stood by him.
