In the Cold War era of post-World War II Britain, the government eyes a new kind of defense—guided missiles—and sets its sights on a remote Scottish locale. The plan centers on Todday, a Hebridean island, where the German project leader Dr Hamburger [Carl Jaffe] champions Todday as the ideal site. The islanders cherish a quiet, close-knit way of life, and the arrival of engineers, plans, and power disrupts every routine. From the outset, the locals push back, hampering construction and voicing their concerns in every possible way as they try to preserve their everyday rhythms.

Amid the tension, an RAF officer [Basil Dignam] is sent to negotiate with the islanders. He soon finds himself torn between duty and empathy, and he falls for Janet Macleod [Jeannie Carson], the local schoolteacher who embodies the island’s warmth and stubborn independence. His growing attachment deepens his understanding of what the base would mean to the people who live there, underscoring the human cost behind strategic calculations. A delegation of scientists and air force personnel accompanies him to Todday, presenting the project and trying to win the locals over with data, demonstrations, and assurances.

The conflict takes a sharper turn when a missile is launched from another Scottish site but its guidance system malfunctions. Instead of heading out to sea, the missile veers toward land and lands on privately owned property. The islanders claim this as a small victory, celebrating their supposed triumph by dancing around the site. The RAF’s attempts to negotiate a path forward fail to break the deadlock, and the base ultimately is abandoned, leaving behind a lingering sense of what might have been.

As if the political and military friction weren’t enough, Todday introduces a whimsical, almost folkloric obstacle: a rare pink seagull that nests only on the island, supposedly reinforced by Janet’s quiet influence. The government grasps at a way to resolve the impasse, and Janet’s pink gull becomes a point of contention and curiosity. In a bold, televised moment, Drooby [Ronnie Corbett] travels to London to appear on a program with Richard Dimbleby to discuss the pink gulls and their odd place in the story of Todday. A separate TV debate, titled “Free Speech,” then examines the delicate balance between national security and wildlife, turning a local dispute into a national conversation.

The pink gulls transform from a local oddity into a tourist magnet. The island’s story evolves into a broader cultural moment, and visitors begin to flock to Todday to glimpse the pink-feathered birds and the landscape that shaped the controversy. Hotels and local life bend around this new draw, with the Pink Gull Hotel serving as a cheeky nod to the island’s notoriety. In time, the pink gulls persist, and a new generation of pink-nested birds continues to attract attention, ensuring Todday’s name remains linked to an unusual chapter in the era’s history.
