American naturalist Hank Noel Marshall lives on a Tanzania nature preserve, dedicating his days to studying the behavior of a proud group of big cats. He is supposed to pick up his wife Madeleine Tippi Hedren and their children John John Marshall, Jerry Jerry Marshall, and Melanie Melanie Griffith from the airport, but a warning from his friend Mativo Kyalo Mativo about an imminent grant committee keeps Hank at the ranch while he gives Mativo a thorough tour of the preserve and explains the intricate dynamics within the lion pride. Hank hopes to secure funding without disrupting the animals’ routines, yet the impending visit weighs on every decision he makes.

When the grant committee finally arrives, Prentiss Steve Miller immediately expresses disapproval of the big cats, even threatening to shoot them. A minor scuffle between two lions distracts Hank, and he steps in to force a break, suffering a bite to his hand in the process. While Hank tends to his wound, a more dangerous turn unfolds: the tigers attack several committee members, leaving some injured. Hank offers help, but the committee, rattled and fearful, opts to retreat. This tense moment seeds growing concerns—concerns that intensify as Hank brings his family to the ranch, hoping for safety but understanding the risk that lingers.

As Hank and Mativo continue to face the danger, two tigers manage to board the boat they’re using to depart for the airport. Disaster strikes when Mativo steers into a log in the water, causing the craft to sink. The two men fight their way to safety, swimming toward shore as the threat lingers over their heads. Back on land, Madeleine, John, Jerry, and Melanie are advised by airport attendant Lenord Lenord Bokwa to board a bus, and they eventually reach the ranch to find the house and grounds strangely empty. Upon entering, they are shocked to see a zebra carcass being fed to the lions right outside the door. The family freezes as the animals begin to enter the house; Togar the rogue lion presses the family, forcing them to think quickly about escape. Jerry seizes a rifle and makes a bold attempt to shoot Togar while Robbie, the pride’s leader, engages in the struggle. Melanie, perched on edge, fears for her father’s safety and the family’s fate.

Meanwhile, Hank and Mativo, still pursued by the tigers, improvise a route to safety on two bicycles borrowed from a local village. To keep the cats from following Hank all the way to the airport, Mativo climbs a tree and draws their attention away. Hank manages to reach Lenord’s car and drives back to assist Mativo, though a punctured tire complicates the escape. In a daring bid to survive, Hank runs toward the ranch while Mativo keeps the tigers at bay with an improvised umbrella, buying precious time for a reunion with the family and a deeper sense of resolve.

The next morning, the family attempts a desperate escape by sea on Hank’s boat, only to be thwarted when an elephant yanks the craft back to shore and destroys it. John rides off on Hank’s motorcycle to seek help, but the pursuit by the big cats forces him to plunge into a lake. After a harrowing cycle of chases and near misses, the family finds another house to sleep in, waking to the unsettling reality that they are surrounded by the pride. Yet, despite the danger, they remain alive, and the animals’ actions convince them that harm is not imminent.

As the situation grows more fraught, Prentiss makes one final push to persuade the committee to hunt down Hank’s lions; he and Rick Rick Glassey shoot several of the big cats regardless of Hank’s protests. The confrontation escalates when Togar launches another attack, and Hank rushes in to intervene. Tragically, Prentiss and Rick are killed in the crossfire, then Togar returns to battle Robbie, where Robbie ultimately stands up to the challenger and the fight ends. Hank arrives at the ranch to find his family waiting, relieved to be alive, and Mativo arrives too. Hank asks him not to repeat the deaths of Prentiss or Rick, and the family, grateful for their safety, agrees to stay for the week, reinforcing the fragile balance between human life and the wild world that surrounds them.
