Two years after the death of her husband Frank, Róise Bríd Ní Neachtain becomes increasingly isolated from the people around her, going through the motions of daily life. An unchipped, apparently ownerless dog appears at Róise’s doorstep and is insistent on staying with her. The unexpected visitor manages to awaken something in Róise and gradually reconnects her with her family and wider community.
Róise grows deeply attached to the mysterious dog, who seems to bear traits of her late husband. Believing the dog is Frank’s reincarnation, she begins calling him Frank. Her son, Alan Cillian O’Gairbhi, is frightened by his mother’s fixation, worried that she is slipping into delusion as the absence of his father lingers. Yet the rest of the neighborhood and community are patient at first, humoring her belief as they start to notice echoes of Frank in the dog’s demeanor.
Donncha Lorcan Cranitch, the next-door neighbour, grows openly antagonistic toward “Frank” after Róise declines his advances. He drugs the dog and has him sent to the pound, insisting that the animal is dangerous. The pound’s vet evaluates the dog and finds him to be a calm, good-tempered animal, and he allows “Frank” to be adopted by another family, who soon rename him “Sparky.”
Róise, Alan, and Maidhcí Ruadhán de Faoite investigate and locate the dog with the vet’s help. Seeing how the dog continues to comfort others who are grieving, the trio recognizes that Frank’s presence has become a force for healing in their community. With that realization, Róise chooses to welcome a new dog into her life and gradually rebuild her routines, carrying forward while honoring the memory of her late husband.
