In Cambodia, during the Khmer Rouge era, families were torn apart as the regime pressed a dream of an agrarian utopia. The land’s old rhythms were replaced by scarcity and fear, and for a generation, rice arrived not from the soil but in sacks offloaded from United Nations relief trucks. Against this backdrop, one family struggles to hold onto their plot and their future, a quiet resilience at the heart of a nation in transition.

The father, Pouev [/actor/mom-soth], is worried that the family’s plot of land is shrinking and that harvests may never be large enough to feed everyone. The mother, Yim Om [/actor/peng-phan], carries the mounting pressure at home, trying to keep the household together even as her strength wanes under the weight of uncertainty and fatigue.

When a garden accident leaves Poeuv gravely injured by a poisonous thorn, his death becomes a turning point for Om. After a prolonged period of being bedridden, she succumbs to illness and despair, and the family’s stability begins to crack. Over time, Om’s coping choices—alcohol and gambling—pull her further from daily duties, and she is ultimately confined, removed from the day-to-day life of the rice fields and family routines.

With the parents incapacitated, Sakha, the oldest daughter, must shoulder an immense burden. Sakha becomes the de facto head of the household, charged with bringing in the crop and caring for her six sisters. The six sisters are:
