Return to the Beloved 1979

Julien, a once-celebrated concert pianist, is not over his divorce. He is obsessed with regaining his ex-wife Jeanne Kern and their young son Thomas. He still lives in the family home outside Paris, the very place he left for her, while Jeanne has remarried a German doctor, Dr. Stephan Kern, and has cut off contact with him.

Driven by this fixation, Julien enlists a private detective to murder the husband, Detective Keller. But as the man approaches the house at night, Julien shoots him dead with the revolver that belonged to [Dr. Stephan Kern], which he had stolen earlier, and he scatters additional clues to implicate the doctor.

The body is found by the young Thomas, and Jeanne sends an urgent message to Julien asking him to come and support their traumatized child. This moment deepens the strain in a situation already marked by jealousy, grief, and a fragile sense of family.

Stephan must endure Julien’s proprietorial airs while the police, initially mystified by the tense arrangement, devise a clever plan. They arrest Stephan, but secretly hide him in a comfortable hotel and keep a watchful eye on the remaining two suspects, turning the case into a private game of suspicion and leverage.

Jeanne pieces together Julien’s plot and, when confronted, he does not deny it, saying he acted to be with her. In a climactic turn, the police drive up to the house and release Stephan, leaving the two adults to confront the consequences of their actions and the scarred trust between them. The film threads themes of obsession, loyalty, and the perilous edge of longing, painting a slow-burn drama where love, manipulation, and fear collide within a shattered family.
