Ravenous (Les Affamés) 2018

In the wake of a zombie-like outbreak, the rural landscapes of Quebec lie barren, with only a handful of survivors clinging to life. Bonin and his friend Vézina patrol the countryside with shotguns in hand, trading lighthearted doctor jokes to keep their nerves steady as danger quietly approaches. When a routine patrol turns dangerous, Vézina is drawn into the forest, surrounded, and attacked by the infected, a scene that underscores how quickly safety can collapse.

A lone survivor, wife and mother Céline, navigates the chaos behind the wheel and fights back with a machete, turning the car into a weapon as she pushes through the onslaught. Her path intersects with two elderly, armed women, Thérèse and Pauline, who confront her with a stark test: she must strip to prove she hasn’t been bitten. Satisfied that Céline is clean, they take her in, offering a fragile shelter amid the collapse.

Meanwhile, Bonin encounters Tania, a young woman bearing a bite mark who insists she was attacked by a dog and not by the infected. Though she is initially restrained for safety, Bonin frees her and, with a sense of urgency, drives her away alongside a small girl, Zoé. In the fields nearby, Bonin spies infected figures gathered around a stack of found objects arranged in a mysterious, ritual-like formation, hinting at a strange purpose behind the chaos.

The trio—Bonin, Tania, and Zoé—returns toward Thérèse and Pauline’s home, only to realize the house sits directly in the path of the infected invasion. The group flees as the swarm closes in, and they encounter two more survivors: the elderly former insurance agent Réal and the young Ti-Cul, who wields a rifle in a world where every moment could be the last. Together, they seek safety in a cabin, hoping to outlast the surge.

Inside, they discover a note from an anonymous survivor warning others to stay away from the town and to seek out anyone still alive on Quebec Route 113. The situation worsens as Pauline is bitten, and Thérèse kills Pauline to prevent further harm. The bite that Réal sustains earlier proves fatal in the worst possible way: Réal turns, bites [Ti-Cul], and is promptly dispatched by Céline, who also kills Ti-Cul before he can turn.

Overwhelmed, the remaining survivors are forced to keep moving. [Thérèse] stays behind long enough to give Bonin a chance to escape with Zoé, sacrificing herself in the process. Surrounded and exhausted, [Céline] fights the advancing horde with a ferocity that mirrors the desperation of their dwindling group. Bonin, determined to protect Zoé, leads the infected away and entrusts Zoé to [Tania], who hides her in a tunnel and urges her to stay strong—the girl is told that she is the strongest. Then Tania vanishes into the chaos as the undead close in.

On the road, Zoé continues alone, the weight of her mission mirrored by the empty horizon. She eventually is picked up by a survivor in a racecar, a figure glimpsed earlier in the film’s opening, after she warns him not to press on down the road.

A post-credits moment lingers in memory: the once-living Bonin and Tania, now turned, stand beside a tower of stacked chairs with a parrot perched atop, a haunting image that leaves the fate of the few left behind in uncertain suspense.
