Mohan is a wealthy man who returns from abroad after his studies, carrying a strong sense of pride that distances him from those around him, including his own mother. His arrogance drives him toward a local prostitute, Kantha, to whom he generously gives all his wealth and property. On his mother’s insistence, he marries Chandra, his cousin and a traditional village girl, hoping to honor family expectations rather than his own desires. On their wedding night, Mohan learns that Chandra’s culture and ways are different from his own, and he retreats back to Kantha, starting a downward spiral that reshapes every part of his life.
Gradually Mohan loses nearly everything he owns. The wealth that defined him evaporates, leaving him with nothing but his house. His addictions take root—alcohol and the lure of Kantha grow stronger than any familial duty or affection. He becomes estranged from his mother’s memory, even skipping the funeral rites, which are carried out by his friend Balu. Despite Balu’s repeated warnings and attempts to steer him back toward decency, Mohan stubbornly resists change, clinging to the self-destructive path he has chosen.
As the years pass, Mohan is struck by leprosy, and with no funds left for treatment, Kantha casts him out. A terrible storm plunges him into even harsher tests: he loses a leg and his eyesight, and he is forced to beg for his livelihood. In his darkest moments, he wanders until he reaches a home where Chandra now works as a maid. Neither recognizes the other at first, their appearances altered by hardship and deformity, but she feeds him with quiet humanity.
The story threads through a quiet reunion as Balu seeks out Chandra to understand Mohan’s fate. When the trio finally recognize each other, Mohan asks Chandra and Balu to marry so that Chandra can avoid a life of misery. He also requests that Balu arrange statues in the city that depict him in his deformed state, so that others might learn from his life and choose a better path. The film closes on a reflective note: many years later, Balu and Chandra stand beside Mohan’s statue, both of them moved to tears by the memory of the man who once had everything and lost so much, hoping that his story will serve as a warning and a testament to resilience.
