Race for Glory 1989

Dirt track racer Cody Gifford, Alex McArthur, teams up with his best friend and crew chief Chris Washburn, Peter Berg, and his girlfriend Jenny Eastman, Pamela Ludwig, to build a 500cc superbike in their garage. They take it to the American qualifiers, and even when the bike falls over, Cody stays in the chase, keeping pace with Klaus Kroeter, the two-time German world champion, Oliver Stritzel aboard a factory Samurai, until the two crash together. After this tense moment, Cody manages to post a faster time than Kroeter at the Czechoslovak time trials, signaling the start of a heated season.

The Belgian Grand Prix opens with high stakes as Kroeter edges out the field, including Cody, who finishes in fourth place behind Kroeter, Mike Baldwin, and Wayne Gardner. This result nudges Cody toward a new path: an offer to become Kroeter’s teammate at Samurai, where he would serve as a blocker and leave his friends behind to pursue the dream of racing at the highest level. The tension between loyalty and ambition deepens as Kroeter then wins Yugoslavia ahead of Eddie Lawson and Cody, and follows up with another victory in Germany, this time ahead of Cody and Ron Haslam, solidifying Kroeter’s grip on the season.

The Austrian Grand Prix intensifies the rivalry. Kroeter takes an early lead with Cody close behind, and Italian rider Lalo Giacomo in the mix. A crash caused by Kroeter sends Cody and Giacomo off the track, and Giacomo’s misfortune worsens when he’s hit in the leg by Eddie Lawson, leaving him with a broken leg. The setback pushes Cody toward a personal reckoning; he quits and heads home to confront the news of his father Joe’s death. A heartfelt letter from Joe reveals his wish for Cody to win the Grand Prix, a message that rekindles Cody’s resolve.

Reunited with his friends and Jenny, Cody and the team decide to rebuild the bike, channeling the memory of Joe into a renewed effort. The French Grand Prix tests their perseverance as several bikes overheat, and Cody finds himself in second place, right behind Kroeter. In a dramatic finale, Kroeter’s engine blows on the last turn, handing Cody the win, with Mike Baldwin, Wayne Gardner, Eddie Lawson, Randy Mamola, and Kroeter finishing in the following positions. The new champion is crowned, and Cody, Jenny, and their new hiree Fujimoto celebrate the hard-won victory, marking a turning point in Cody Gifford’s racing journey.
