Savithrikkutty, Lakshmi the eldest daughter of an aging poor Nambuthiri Brahmin, is married off to an elderly widower Kottarakkara Sreedharan Nair of the same caste. The new household includes two other members, Appu (the man’s young son) and Amminiyamma, Kaviyoor Ponnamma. With Amminiyamma’s own son working far away, Savithri becomes the primary helper in a home where the age gap between husband and wife casts a dull, colorless shade over their intimate life. The priestly duties that begin to consume the husband’s days leave Savithri with long, quiet stretches to fill, and she copes by tending to the house, sharing chores, and forming a gentle, unromantic routine with Appu, the boy who slowly comes to trust his new stepmother.
