What Is Pray Away About?
The premise of Pray Away without spoilers.
In the 1970s, five men struggling with same-sex attraction within an Evangelical church founded Exodus International, aiming to find salvation from what they considered a "homosexual lifestyle." As the organization gained prominence, its leaders privately confronted their own persistent attractions. Years of leadership eventually led to a dramatic change: many former leaders publicly came out as LGBTQ+, rejecting the movement they had previously supported and exposing the damaging practices of conversion therapy.

Pray Away Reviews & Ratings
Critics gave Pray Away 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and 76 on Metacritic, and IMDb users rate it 6.5/10. Our Echo Score gives it 68/100, strongest in art & craft (78) and weakest in story & flow (60).
Pray Away Echo Score Breakdown
Pray Away delivers a compelling examination of conversion therapy, offering vivid archival footage and earnest testimonies that underline its emotional gravity. Critics commend its measured direction and the documentary's capacity to illuminate personal trauma, while several reviewers note a surface‑level treatment that limits narrative depth and artistic ambition. The film’s impact is therefore strong in subject matter yet restrained by its execution, resulting in a mixed yet noteworthy overall impression.
Our own 0–100 rating, built from five aspects: art, character, story, the sensory experience and how well a film rewatches.
- Art & Craft 78
The documentary’s visual craft is praised for its striking cinematography and thoughtful interweaving of present‑day interviews with archival material. Critics highlight the skillful editing that creates a measured yet forceful tone, though some point to moments of artistic flatness that reduce visual dynamism. Overall, the art and craft are regarded as solid, contributing positively to the film’s presentation.
- Character & Emotion 70
Character portrayal centers on survivors whose testimonies convey genuine pain and resilience. Reviewers note the emotional resonance of these narratives, describing the journeys as moving and candid. However, the lack of deeper character development and occasional reliance on talking‑head interviews temper the impact. Consequently, the character dimension is viewed as moderately effective.
- Story & Flow 60
The film follows a straightforward chronological structure that outlines the rise and fall of the ex‑gay movement. Critics appreciate the inclusion of multiple viewpoints, yet many criticize the limited exploration of new insights and a tendency toward surface‑level analysis. Pacing is measured but lacks narrative complexity, resulting in a story that is informative but not particularly original.
- Sensory Experience 68
Sensory elements such as the soundtrack and sound design support the documentary’s somber tone without overwhelming it. Reviewers commend the use of archival footage to create visual cohesion, though some find the overall aesthetic occasionally flat. The sensory experience enhances the subject matter, contributing a respectable but not outstanding layer to the film.
- Rewatch Factor 65
Pray Away offers enduring relevance through its powerful subject matter and poignant survivor testimonies, encouraging repeat viewings for deeper understanding. Nonetheless, the perceived lack of new information and occasional surface‑level treatment may limit sustained appeal. Overall, the documentary possesses moderate rewatch value, appealing mainly to audiences invested in the issue.
