Journalist Matt Nash Dylan Walsh is known for investigations that routinely land him in trouble. In a probe into the drug scene, he’s shot, but his bulletproof vest keeps him alive. The editor-in-chief of The Examiner convicts that his reckless reporting has a price and plans to fire him to protect the paper’s reputation, yet she gives him one last assignment. He is tasked with locating three missing environmental activists who had previously breached Saturn Energy’s headquarters and stolen data on a secret project. The trio is later found by company employees and killed, under the leadership of security chief Clemens Tobin Bell.

Matt makes contact with the activists and is granted access to a concealed entrance into Saturn Energy’s premises on the outskirts of the city. There, he uncovers that the corporation is pursuing an alternative energy source. A trial operation soon taps into the Los Angeles grid, which explains the recurring blackouts that plague the town. The technique, however, produces an enormous amount of heat that must be dissipated, and the process is engineered underground. A crack beneath the site forms, causing an uncontrolled heat discharge. An employee who seeks to warn the public dies in an explosion, underscoring the danger of the venture.

Meanwhile, Matt earns the trust of Gabriella St.John Alison Eastwood, a Saturn Energy manager, and with her help he begins to see the activists’ alleged crimes in a new light. Preparations for a final, full-speed experiment at the research facility ramp up, threatening to unleash a catastrophe if the test runs to completion. The duo gains entry to the site again and sabotages the test by turning off the coolant, allowing heat to accumulate and the installation to head toward self-destruction. In the midst of the tension, Clemens raises the stakes by threatening Gabriella, and Matt hurls himself at the security chief in a tense struggle until Gabriella takes him down with a shot from Clemens’ own gun.

As the investigation tightens, Saturn Energy’s head—a former secretary of the Department of Energy—makes a bid to escape, but chooses suicide when cornered by patrol units. The reconciliation between Matt and Gabriella deepens, yet their collaboration is shadowed by the moral calculus of exposure. Gabriella warns that publishing the story could jeopardize her ability to carry on Dr. Eisley Victor Raider-Wexler’s work and tarnish his reputation. Matt’s response is measured and final: there is no story, and the film closes on that unresolved tension.
