In 1971, John Francis, later known as ‘Planetwalker,’ was deeply affected by an oil tanker collision in the San Francisco Bay. Witnessing the devastation and the oiled birds, he made a radical decision: to abandon motorized transportation and travel only on foot. Following this, he took a vow of silence, believing that attentive listening was more valuable than speaking. For the next seventeen years, he walked across the country and back, observing the world and the people he encountered. Through these experiences, his understanding of environmentalism evolved, shaped by the connections he made along the way.
