Director Richard Williams devoted nearly three decades and most of his earnings to the project, initially inspired by the Arabian Nights and provisionally titled Mullah Nasruddin. He gathered a team of talented artists, incorporating Hollywood professionals to enhance their skills, and envisioned groundbreaking, visually stunning sequences. Despite years of effort and potential investors, the film remained unfinished until the success of Who Framed Roger Rabbit provided a much-needed studio budget.
