Spoilers ahead
Kannaki Pooja Umashankar is a woman from Puhar in the Chola kingdom, whose marriage to Kovalan Uddika Premarathna, a wealthy baron, anchors a tale that spans more than two millennia. The film draws its depth from the legendary Tamil epic Silappatikaram by Ilango Adigal, and it places us in a time when Southern India was divided among three great monarchies—the Chola, Pandya, and Chera—whose realms shaped the lives of people across present-day Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Within this setting, Kannaki’s life and Kovalan’s choices unravel against a backdrop of courtly intrigue, art, and strict codes of conduct.
