Kamal Haasan as Suyambulingam is an orphan who left school after the fourth grade and by 2014 has carved out a life as a cable-TV entrepreneur in the small Tamil Nadu town of Papanasam. He owns two buildings in the village center and a sturdy house set within a five-acre garden, living with his wife, Gautami Tadimalla as Rani Suyambulingam, and their two daughters. The elder, 16-year-old Selvi Suyambulingam, is portrayed by Nivetha Thomas, while the younger, 10-year-old Pullimeena Suyambulingam, is played by Esther Anil. Suyambulingam’s world centers on his family and his quiet love of cinema; his evenings are spent in front of the television inside his modest office, a ritual that defines his personal escape and social status in the town.

The balance of this life is rocked when Selvi becomes a target of a horrifying violation during an overnight nature camp. A hidden cellphone records her in the shower, and the perpetrator is Varun Prabhakar, the spoiled son of Inspector General Geetha Prabhakar. The danger escalates when Varun begins blackmail, demanding sexual favors and instructing Selvi to come to the garden shed at midnight. Selvi brings along her mother, Rani, and the two plead with Varun to leave them alone, but the situation spirals when Varun tries to coerce Rani into replacing Selvi in the pact. In a moment of rage and fear, Selvi strikes Varun and he dies instantly. The two women are left with a grim choice, and Meena, the younger daughter, becomes a witness to the aftermath as Varun’s body is buried in a compost pit.

In the wake of the murder, Suyambulingam devises a plan to shield his family from the law. He quietly orchestrates Varun’s disappearance by removing the broken cellphone and switching Varun’s SIM into another phone, which he then discards by tossing it onto a national-permit truck. He also disguises the disposal of Varun’s car to avoid immediate detection. A crucial observer in this web of events is Constable Perumal, portrayed by Kalabhavan Mani, who carries a personal grudge against Suyambulingam and grows suspicious of the family’s movements. Seeking to cement an airtight alibi, Suyambulingam persuades his family to accompany him on a trip to Tenkasi for a temple prayer meeting, followed by a cinema visit, a hotel stay, and a meal at a restaurant—a carefully choreographed sequence designed to produce receipts that would serve as an unassailable alibi.

Meanwhile, Geetha Prabhakar, the IG, played by Asha Sarath, launches a formal inquiry into her missing son, setting the stage for a tense confrontation with Suyambulingam and his family. The investigation unfolds with Geetha testing every lead: she doubts the family’s narratives but finds the alibi hard to pierce at first because the receipts and receipts-backed timings seem plausible. Suyambulingam, anticipating the probing questions, has already masterminded a schedule that allows him to travel alone on the dates in question and then return with his family to the same venues, reinforcing the illusion of a watertight alibi. As Geetha peels back each layer, she eventually recognizes that the alibi rests on a precise sequence of movements—one that only someone with his planning could have executed.

To guard against an arrest, Suyambulingam enlists his brother-in-law, Thangaraj, played by Abhishek Vinod, instructing him to notify the media if the family is ever taken into custody. The tension escalates as Perumal intensifies his pursuit, and the truth begins to surface. Geetha eventually learns from Varun’s circle that Selvi had created a video documenting Varun’s misconduct, deepening the case against Varun’s complicity and complicating the family’s defense. Meena eventually reveals the actual burial site of Varun’s body, and a search of the compost pit seems to confirm that Varun’s remains are there. Yet when the pit is opened, investigators uncover the carcass of a boar instead of Varun, throwing the case back into doubt.

In a bold pivot, Suyambulingam and Meena go to the media to voice their claims of brutal harassment by the police, insisting that they are innocent of Varun’s murder. The public outcry leads to a harsh reckoning: Perumal is suspended, the entire police station is reshuffled, and Geetha resigns from her post. A district court places a hold on further police interrogations of Suyambulingam’s family without their permission, and the family is ultimately cleared of wrongdoing.

In the aftermath, Geetha and her husband, Prabhakar, portrayed by Ananth Narayan Mahadevan, consider relocating to the United States. Before leaving, Prabhakar asks Suyambulingam to reveal what happened to Varun, and in a moment of quiet guilt, Suyambulingam cryptically notes that Varun’s death occurred by accident, offering his best wishes for Geetha and her husband’s new life. The film closes with a haunting visual: as Suyambulingam signs out, a new sub-inspector hints that Varun’s body may still be hidden beneath the construction of the police station, a suggestion reinforced by a flashback of Suyambulingam burying something beneath the station’s foundations.
