Sandhya Sandhya arrives in India with her husband Chris to visit their family after her father’s death. They are met at the airport with cool indifference by his daughter Anitha, who accompanies them to the family home. Twenty years earlier, Sandhya [Sandhya] and her family travel to the United States after her father finds work there with the help of his younger brother Rama Rao [Ramarao], who is already living in the country. Adinarayana [Adinarayana], a staunch traditionalist, struggles to reconcile American life with Indian customs, clinging to old rituals even as Rama Rao tries to help him adapt. They become neighbors with Seshagiri Rao [Seshagiri Rao], an ice cream shop owner, and his son Ganapathi, a gourmand who adds a touch of humor to the family’s arrival. One day, Ganapathi takes Sandhya to the supermarket and then unexpectedly leaves, triggering Sandhya’s anxiety after a near-miss with a car. It’s in this moment that she meets Chris and, through language barriers and shared curiosity, the two form a connection. The couple ends up at the home of Seshagiri Rao, where they discover they are neighbors and begin to picture a future together.

As Sandhya’s bond with Chris deepens, they also connect with Ronald Ronald, a black drummer who becomes a close friend and confidant. Adinarayana disapproves of these growing bonds, yet Sandhya and Chris persevere, with Ganapathi (the neighbor’s son) assisting in teaching them Telugu. Their attempts at language are endearing and clumsy at first, but they quickly improve, drawing the ire and then the reluctant support of Adinarayana as he witnesses the couple’s sincerity. Both lovers slowly receive marriage proposals from two different directions: Ganapathi’s neighborly circle nudges them toward tradition, while Ronald and the broader American life push them toward a different path. Adinarayana tries to arrange an arranged marriage for Sandhya with an Indian doctor named Ravi [Doctor Ravi], a progressive physician who encourages her to continue pursuing her relationship with Chris. Ravi’s forward-thinking stance complicates the traditional plan, intensifying the tension within the family about what Sandhya’s future should look like. In a pivotal late-night decision, Chris and Sandhya secretly meet, and Chris proposes that they elope. Sandhya harbors mixed feelings about leaving behind family and tradition, but she agrees to the possibility of a life together with him. The couple’s escape plan unfolds as they flee on a motorcycle and eventually steal an RV when the motorcycle breaks down. With limited money and resources, they rely on their wits to survive—finding milk in the RV’s fridge to stave off hunger as they dodge the police and navigate the unfamiliar landscape.

Their journey leads them to a neighborhood of fellow Indians who welcome them into their home, offering shelter and a sense of community. As Adinarayana learns of their disappearance, Rama Rao steps in to help, and the family eventually comes to a compromise: two ceremonies—one at a church and another at a temple—so that both communities can honor the couple’s union. The plan preserves the couple’s love while respecting the family’s customs, and the marriage becomes a bridge between two worlds, with Ronald and Adinarayana eventually finding a shared path forward.

Back in the present, Sandhya speaks of the universality of humanity and equality, while Chris reflects on his growing appreciation for Indian culture. The couple extends an invitation to Anitha to come to America and live with them, signaling a new beginning for the family. The next day, as they prepare to depart for the airport, Anitha sits in her room, contemplating the future. In a final turn of forgiveness and reconciliation, she emerges, asks Chris to forgive her, and joins them on the flight, symbolizing a reunification that echoes the long journey they have all undertaken.
