Young Sammy Benson is fed up with the rules his parents impose. His grandmother Martha Benson tells him he can wish on a wishing star, and he makes a single wish:
I wish that kids rule the world.
Instantly, the world shifts in a playful yet unsettling way: adults start acting like kids, while children take on the most important roles in daily life—running businesses, restaurants, gardens, and stations, and reshaping how communities operate. The surprise and chaos push Sammy and his sister, Carla Benson, to face a world that has been turned on its head and to search for a way to reverse the magic.
As the new order unfolds, Sammy’s grandfather, Jack Benson, experiences a comic misstep when he accidentally blunders into a stop sign and spots a little kid dressed as a police officer, leaving him confused about who’s truly in charge. This bizarre incident echoes the larger confusion gripping adults and highlights the fragility of the sudden reversal.
Carla’s life also gets tangled in the upheaval: her best friend Sue calls from Carla’s house, and Carla discovers she had a presentation she didn’t know could have put her mother’s job at risk. She delivers a strong performance, showing that even in a topsy-turvy world, competence and courage shine through.
Meanwhile, Sammy heads to the laboratory where Chaz is brooding over an evil plan to mystify the world even further. Sammy and Carla join forces, working together to thwart him, persuade him not to go through with the scheme, and begin to tilt the balance back toward normalcy.
With the world gradually returning to its rightful order, the siblings embark on a family vacation, even as their grandparents remain detained. The ordeal teaches Sammy and Carla about responsibility, teamwork, and the value of ordinary life, leaving them hopeful about a future where adults and kids can coexist more thoughtfully once again.
