Operation Cross Eagles 1968

During the Second World War in Yugoslavia, a captured American military courier, Sgt. Sean McAfee [Rory Calhoun], is thought to hold the plans for a major Allied operation in the Balkans, known as Operation Cross Eagles. The capture comes with an air of courtesy from his captor, Rear Admiral Von Vogels [Relja Bašić], a calm and formidable German commander whose behavior hints at more than a straightforward prisoner exchange.

In response, a small team of American commandos, led by Lt. Bradford [Richard Conte], is dispatched to seize a German colonel, Col. Streich [Rick West], with the aim of trading him for the courier. The mission is monitored by Yugoslav authorities, who become aware of the plan and the delicate balance of risk and leverage it represents.

Bradford and McAfee undertake a daring infiltration, disguising themselves as monks and moving through a Nazi-held fort while pretending to sell fruit. Their cover is blown in a tense moment, and when the firefight erupts, they fight their way through to secure Col. Streich. The colonel is abandoned in a lagoon along the Adriatic shore to be picked up later by German troops, a move that underscores the botched precision of the operation and the dangers surrounding every decision.

The next phase sees Bradford and McAfee infiltrating the villa where a British captain is being held by Admiral Von Vogels. Here, tension peaks as Cpl Bell [Demeter Bitenc] betrays the Americans, attempting to prevent the capture of the Admiral. Yet the Americans persevere, and when they finally confront their quarry, they reveal a surprising truth: the long-running rumor of Operation Cross Eagles was nothing more than a smokescreen, and their true objective was to secure Admiral Von Vogels himself.

In the end, the story reframes the mission as a tense cat-and-mouse game where deception, loyalty, and high-stakes decisions collide. The men’s actions, split across a web of counter-moves and hidden agendas, push the narrative toward a revelation about how far people will go when confronted with crucial wartime choices—and what it means to choose between a rumored operation and the real objective that lies beneath it.
