Spoilers ahead
After murdering his girlfriend’s alleged rapist, Allen Meneric, Nick Stahl, is sent to a hospital for the criminally insane to be evaluated. The institution swarms with a cast of troubled souls and a staff whose manner can feel cold or detached, a setting where danger often lurks behind calm smiles and clipped conversations. The atmosphere is tense from the start, with patients who appear merely odd or mildly troubled, yet carry the undercurrents of something far more menacing, and guards who trade sarcasm for shorthand, almost as if the walls themselves are listening.
