Kwagga Leon Schuster runs a small farm shop in the fictional Southern African country of Nambabwe, where he has built a cheeky reputation by staging a pretend lion kill to swindle foreign tourists. The locals nickname him “Urumbo” — the Lion Killer — a name that sticks as his audacious, roguish charm draws both laughter and trouble.
When the United Nations Transition Assistance Group (U.N.T.A.G.) arrives to supervise the fragile peace and oversee elections after the Nambabwean War for Independence, Kwagga’s world gets tangled with higher stakes. The UN’s American leader, Major Braddock D. Mackay, and his second-in-command, Captain Zapman Bill Flynn, are offered a valuable diamond and must pay 200,000 USD to Doon Robertse Eric Nobbs, Kwagga’s competitive brother who is trying to acquire the family farm left to them by their late father.
Mackay’s greed pulls him toward reckless schemes. He decides to pilfer the natives’ cattle and peddle them to rogue guerrilla fighters across the northern border, a plan that threatens the delicate balance the UNTAG aims to maintain. Amid this tension, Kwagga forms a complicated bond with Inge Liefson Michelle Bestbier, a lieutenant-doctor for U.N.T.A.G., who remains unaware of Mackay’s deceit. When Inge is kidnapped by guerrillas, Kwagga launches a dangerous rescue and uses the moment to force his brother to back off from buying their father’s farm. After this rescue, Kwagga finds himself drawn to Inge, and a personal vendetta begins to fuse with his desire to protect the locals.
To turn the tables on Mackay, Kwagga hatches an elaborate plan to ruin the inspection day. He toys with every member of the inept platoon, employing a series of disguises and tricks. He tricks the springbok-obsessed Joop Hendrick van den Ploes Casper De Vries by faking the death of a springbok and smearing him in animal blood so that a stampede of fear drives him into the base. He also pretends to be a high-ranking Indian officer and orders Rashid Kurt Egelhof, a Bangladeshi sergeant, to park and hide a tank, claiming it threatens the peace mission. In another farce, he poses as a different officer and sells fake rhino horn to a horn-obsessed Japanese soldier, spinning a web of deception that undermines Mackay’s authority.
As the plot thickens, Mackay’s attempt to play by a different rulebook collides with Zapman’s own gambit. Ignoring the arrangements the pair previously made, Zapman pursues a risky move to seize the diamond, even blowing up his own office in a misguided bid to steal it. The UN.T.A.G. platoon is ultimately disbanded, and Kwagga and Inge share a moment of mutual affection, a token of hope amid the chaos.
In a twist of fate, Mackay and Zapman wander the Nambabwe desert with the supposed prize, only to discover the diamond is a forgery. Their frustration and anger simmer as they argue, while Kwagga’s schemes have already set in motion consequences no one anticipated. In a final, irreverent burst of mischief, Kwagga fires a cannon kept to chase away baboons, and the blast shoots Mackay and Zapman to smithereens, bringing a chaotic end to the uneasy peace and leaving Kwagga to face the fallout of his elaborate ruse.
