Not Like Others 2008

Two vampire sisters, Vera Jenny Lampa and Vanja Ruth Vega Fernandez, slip into an illegal club that hums with danger and neon light. Inside, Vera is harassed by a biker Peter Järn; she drags him into the bathroom and, pretending to consent, lures him into a trap where she ends his life with a pocket knife and drinks his blood. The two escape into the night, but the biker gang closes in, determined to exact revenge for what happened.

The film uses quick intercuts to reveal scenes from previous nights, giving context to the sisters’ existence and choices. They belong to a fragile breed of vampires who resemble humans but must subsist on blood to survive. Both sisters are homeless and on the run, yet Vanja clings to a plan: she wants to live openly with her secret human boyfriend and pass as a regular person, inspired by rumors that other vampires have tried this path. To fuel her cravings without killing indiscriminately, she even steals blood from hospitals.

After a run-in with the bikers, Vera and Vanja manage a narrow escape through the eerie Stockholm Ghost Park, but they are separated in the chaos. Vera is picked up by a Taxi Driver David Dencik, who initially seems kind and approachable, only to reveal coercive expectations when he learns she cannot pay. Vera reacts with violence and kills him, a stark reminder of how quickly the balance between predator and prey can tilt.

Reunited briefly, the sisters attend a midnight theatre showing of Night of the Living Dead, where Vanja shares more about her risky plan. Vera begins to panic at the idea of living without her sister and, in a moment of desperation, betrays their location to one of the bikers Jörgen Persson as they speak with his friend Omid Khansari — a glimpse of how fragile trust can be under pressure.

A tense chase follows, culminating in a confrontation at a warehouse. Vera faces the bikers directly while Vanja seizes a chance to escape. In a painful confession, Vera admits to the bikers that she killed their friend, and she meets her end at the hands of the pursuing gang, a brutal reminder of the consequences that ripple through loyalty and survival.

The story closes on a quieter note as Vanja is seen at Stockholm Central Station, where she reconnects with the possibility of a future that might include her human life and a return to normalcy, even as the night’s violence lingers in memory.
