Catherine Morland—a seventeen-year-old girl sheltered by books—travels to Bath with her family’s friends, Mrs Allen and Mr Allen. They hope the waters will ease Mr Allen’s gout, and Catherine is eager to escape into Bath’s social world, a place that promises new friendships, dances, and a taste of independence she has only read about in her beloved Gothic novels.
In Bath, Catherine is introduced to the Thorpe family, and the two sets of siblings bring romance and competition. Isabella Thorpe befriends her, a quick-witted flirt who knows how to make an impression. Catherine’s brother, James Morland, falls for Isabella, while John Thorpe pursues Catherine, a pursuit she does not return with the same ardor.
Amid these social games, Catherine grows fond of the clergyman Henry Tilney, a witty and kind man who treats her with respect. Her bond with his sister, Eleanor Tilney, deepens as they take part in outings together, especially once their brother Frederick Tilney arrives with their father, General Tilney. Isabella, learning that James’s finances are fragile, shifts her affections toward Frederick, and eventually ends the engagement with James in favor of what she sees as a more advantageous match.
Eleanor Tilney invites Catherine to stay at the Tilneys’ home, Northanger Abbey, a place she imagines will be as gloomy and castle-like as the settings of her novels. However, the family’s wealth becomes a point of contention when John Thorpe tells General Tilney that Catherine is an heiress. Upon realizing that Catherine’s family is not as rich as assumed, the General sends her away from the Abbey during the night, a moment that shakes Catherine’s romantic illusions.
Back home, Catherine’s mood darkens as she questions the pleasures and dangers of Gothic fiction. Yet the story moves toward a hopeful turn when Tilney is drawn back into her life and makes a genuine proposal, culminating in a happy ending that reassures her faith in kindness, wit, and true affection.
